What motorcycles do CAMP members ride?
Too often I hear people saying that they wish they could go motocamping, but they don’t have the right motorcycle. To which I always retort that you can motocamp with literal ANY motorcycle, including scooters, 125cc bikes, cruisers, anything. As a matter of fact, our CAMP members ride a variety of motorcycles, as you can see in these photos.
But since data is more important than empty words, I went ahead and looked at exactly what motorcycles our 2023 CAMPers have been riding to our motocamping events. So let’s dig in.
First off - what brand are our members riding?
In looking at the motorcycle brands of our members below, you can see how BMW accounts for over 1/4, with Honda, Triumph, and Yamaha quite far back. I would say no surprise here, except that only a very small minority of members ride either Ducati or Harley Davidson, both below 3%.
But what TYPE of motorcycles are they riding?
When looking at the categories of motorcycles our members are riding, I was dealing with a dilemma. As you can see below, over 50% of our members ride an adventure bike. However, this does NOT mean that they are taking it on dual sport/off road rides. A BMW GS or a Triumph Tiger are Adventure bikes…but the vast majority of them is equipped with street riding tires, and never see dirt. Although I have no precise data on how many ADV bikes are equipped with off road tires vs street tires in our club, I would bet that 75% of them are with street tires.
Many CAMPers have naked bikes, with no fairing whatsoever - they still do perfectly fine motocamping and long distance touring. Many members have sport touring bikes that won’t ever be taken off road; 5% have a cruiser and 2% have a sports bike. Only 10% of our members have a dual sport bike specifically built for off road.
As for the size of the engine, we are all over the place, starting with` a few 125cc engine, quite a few 250-300, and the vast majority in the 650-1,200cc field.
What does it all mean? It means that you can motocamp with us no matter what motorcycle you are riding. So go ahead and join CAMP!
